Eye to eye with a frog?
Up close and personal with my macro.
I reckon the flares really detract from the bokeh, its very strong and pulls attention away from the drop thats in focus. Jordy is right, the DoF is spot on.
The light seems very perpendicular to the frame, was the flash fired? Was the sun over your shoulder? The shutter speed is pretty slow for that apature (even though its an effective F/5.6 or so), so im guessing there was some light avaliable, perhaps diffusing it with some foil or white paper would be in order.
Flares are there to stay because I like them. The sparkles look like diamonds and the refracting light emphasizes that. Yes maybe they are a little too bright but any adjustment in that area borders on manipulation, which I don't want to do. The leaf looked dazzling and I wanted to capture that.
No flash, lots of bright early morning sunlight (9am) and I wanted to use F5.6 because I get the best results there. Within 10 minutes the lighting had changed so no time for the foil or white paper that I just happen to keep handy in my pocket!
